How to combine beauty and usefulness in a summer cottage

How to combine beauty and usefulness in a summer cottage

Everyone has their own paradise.

For fifteen years now we have been developing our site of 20 acres. Like all other gardeners, summer residents, before our territory was always occupied by a vegetable garden, but now flowers have begun to crowd it.

Recently, the site has become prettier, transformed. A recreation area, an alpine slide, a lawn, and a rosehip hedge appeared on it. Now our garden is decorated with flowers from early spring to late autumn. There are a lot of annuals, the seedlings of which I grow myself, and everything else is done here with my own hands.

Of course, we are not going to give up growing vegetables for our family either. After all, how nice it is to pick a fresh cucumber from the garden and make a salad from it, adding your own dill and onion, unusually fragrant and healthy.

To make the whole vegetable garden and garden easy to care for, we very actively use soil mulching. All mulching substances suppress the growth of weeds - some prevent their appearance completely, others only partially, but even in this case it is no longer difficult to cope with weeds.

In summer, we cover the soil between annuals with a thin layer of cut grass. To control weeds around young trees and shrubs, cover the ground under them with a layer of loose organic material or use black plastic wrap. By the way, it is especially good and useful to use it when planting strawberries, when planting pumpkins, zucchini.

For us, our dacha is a favorite resting place, our hobby, working in the garden gives us strength and improves our mood. We devote a lot of time and energy to labor on the ground, but our site, our dacha have changed, which the readers themselves can judge by looking at the photographs.

I wish all other lovers of gardens and vegetable gardens: create your own paradise, make your dreams come true - and your garden will charge you with new vital energy.

How to combine beauty and usefulness in a summer cottage - garden and vegetable garden

How did your landscape design story begin?

My story in the landscape would be ideal for a politician of the Soviet era, as one could write about me in the newspapers: “He went from a simple worker to a leader! Vote for him! "

Since school time, every summer I have been hired by a landscape company. During the summer months, when all my friends were walking, swimming and taking a break from school, I worked on sites.

Laying the lawn, planting plants, dripping trenches, pulling stones and doing other work.

I chose the institute in advance, the specialty with my seasonal part-time job differed radically.

But despite this, he was inseparable from the landscape in his student years. Then I can already say was a foreman, and also was engaged in the maintenance of private gardens.

After graduation from the institute, work in the received specialty implied a work schedule of 1/3 or 1/2.

Therefore, I also continued to work in the landscape, but at that moment there had already been global changes in my life. 2012 was generally a strange year, if you remember ...

With great difficulty, a small family landscape studio was born. The scope of work was relatively small, and so were the objects.

But it was then that it suddenly dawned on me that I needed to completely surrender myself to plants and this wonderful profession, which makes the world around us more beautiful.

One day I quit my permanent job and started the path of globalization of my knowledge and our family company.

Many designers note that now customers certainly want to see a vegetable garden zone on their site. Have you noticed this trend?

This trend is definitely there and its growth can be traced over the past 5 years. During this time, we have designed and implemented a record number of decorative gardens for ourselves.

There were customers who wanted only 3-4 high beds for greenery or strawberries, as well as full-fledged decorative and useful complexes with a raised vegetable garden, an English greenhouse, automatic watering and a composter system.

Gardens of herbs were also created, and lonely greenhouses were also placed. All this shows that people want to be closer to the natural, closer to the earth and plants.

Now you will not surprise anyone with the abundance of fruits and vegetables in stores, but this is all industrial, without a soul. But the taste and benefits of the crop grown on your own plot are unique!

What is the modern vegetable garden like? What trends and trends are currently in trend?

A modern vegetable garden is, of course, high beds. It is difficult to talk about trends, because any zone of the garden, like the entire landscape of the site, depends directly on the architecture of buildings, on desires and style.

There are an excellent variety of options for the execution of ridges, both in materials and in shapes. Stones, wood, metal, and polymers are also used.

The technologies for creating such ridges will be extremely different from each other, as well as their appearance and total cost. This gives customers a wide range of choices and gives us the opportunity to implement interesting ideas.

High beds have occupied the minds of summer residents for several years. How to organize them correctly?

The organization of the garden zone begins with the correct choice of a place on the site, so that the illumination corresponds, there is access to communications or the possibility of their summing.

If we talk about the ridges themselves, there is no universal recipe, it all depends on the materials used. Technologies are fundamentally different from each other.

Here is my universal advice: make the passages between the ridges comfortable, but at the same time proportional, and also use paving, not backfill.

Although the filling is many times easier and cheaper, but if you actively garden it, it will quickly become unusable. And the height of the ridges should still be at least 30 cm, primarily for ease of use.

What materials to choose for the device of the ridges and what to fill?

The materials for creating a garden are primarily determined by the style of the garden itself and the architecture of the buildings on this site. As I said earlier, there is a huge amount of material for the ridges.

Basic materials:

Pine - a simple and inexpensive natural material. After proper impregnation and painting, such gardens last up to 10 years, based on our practice.

They are easy to install, the shapes are mostly angular, rectangular. The most popular material in inquiries from customers.

Larch, decking and WPC (Wood-Polymer Composite). Such gardens will last for 100 years. The ability to create ridges is the same as in pine.

Prices are 2-3 times different from pine. Larch, in my understanding, has a higher priority in view of its natural origin.

Sheet metal... You can make any shape from rectangles and ovals to boats and zigzags.

A big minus - the metal is very hot in the sun, which will undoubtedly affect the crops grown and their watering.

There are two material options:

1) Inexpensive ordinary metal, which will need to be periodically cleaned / tinted.

2) Expensive weather-resistant steel Cor-Ten. It does not need coating, but it looks like rusty metal, so it is not suitable for every area.

A rock... The cost depends on the choice of stone and technology, but such ridges are unlikely to be cheap. If we are talking about concrete-filled forms, then we must not forget about the provision of drainage.

There are options for both cladding (in regular gardens, for example) and creating ridges immediately from stone (a kind of Scandinavian style).

Monochrome garden

The riot of colors is tiring too. And I want to stop my gaze on something calmer. A good solution at a summer cottage in this matter is monochrome flower beds.

Although it seems that creating such a flower bed is easier than ever, but this is not entirely true. Like any element of landscape design, they require attention and patience.

Despite the fact that the Germans are a rather pedantic and restrained people, even they were imbued with the idea of monochrome flower beds, calling them colored dreams. Therefore, we want to simplify your task - to give an algorithm for creating such a flower garden. After all, it is quite possible to create it with your own hands at a summer cottage.

Principles of creating monochrome flower beds

There is an opinion that a monochrome flower garden is just a group planting of flowers of the same type. But in flower beds of this type, several types should be present. Moreover, these flowers must have a different habit in order to create a complete composition.

Ideally, such a flower garden retains its color for all four seasons, thanks to the color

  • bark,
  • roots,
  • leaves,
  • escapes,
  • garden sculptures.

But in most cases we are content with the period from March to October or even less.

In order for your flower garden to really be monochrome, you need to follow several principles.

  1. A well-established composition is created in at least 2 seasons. Ideally, this takes about 3 years. After all, each flower is like a person - with its own preferences, requirements, character.
  2. When creating a plan-project of a flower bed or garden, it is necessary to take into account not only the color of flowers, but also leaves, bark, roots, garden figures, etc. At least two types of plants (and the more, the better) should bloom simultaneously on a flower bed during flowering. That is why the first year of planting a flower garden is a trial one. At this time, you need to track how the selected plants feel in your specific area. It is advisable to keep a flowering diary, which will help to adjust the flower bed if necessary.
  3. Annuals are very useful in monochrome flower gardens. They begin to bloom from mid-June (and sometimes even earlier), when the spring flowers have already fallen, and the summer perennials have not yet blossomed. It is better to plant them as seedlings, because, thus, the onset of their flowering period is accelerated.
  4. Bulbous plants, a must in monochrome flower gardens, are very moody. Therefore, you need to know exactly when they bloom in your garden. Here again the first, "training" year will help you.
  5. A monochrome flower garden often turns into a monochrome garden, since it needs 3-4 tiers in its structure. The last tier in most cases is made up of shrubs, vines or even trees.
  6. The use of ornamental grasses and plants with beautiful, colorful (or even green) leaves is encouraged. Moreover, even in the event of an unforeseen shedding of flowers (you never know, the summer will turn out to be excessively dry or rainy, for example), the flower garden will not look naked. Varieties of ornamental cabbage, asparagus, pampas grass, hosta are good for this role.
  1. For visual diversity, you need to alternate the shapes of flowers and leaves of plants in a flower bed. For example, liliaceae with long leaves and incense with large leaves look good next to them. By the same principle, large flowers are planted surrounded by small-flowered plants.
  2. Since money is an important factor in creating a flower bed, then a monochrome garden, or rather the plants in it, at least 50% of their number should be perennials. But, at the same time, it must be borne in mind that they have a short flowering period and need reinforcement with annuals.

Therefore, you first need to draw a flower garden on paper, take into account all the requirements and desires of flowers, and only after that proceed to the implementation of the project in reality.

Varieties of flower beds of the same color

Honestly, your garden can be of any color. But the problem is to match the entire spectrum of plants of a certain color. Therefore, there are several basic colors that are based on when planning:

White flowers grow from early spring (snowdrops) to late autumn (ornamental cabbage, which is not afraid even of frosts down to -18!). Ideal for evening contemplation. After all, the lunar color is reflected from the white flowers and leaves, and they look like a continuation of the lunar path. Therefore, silvery plants (yaskolka, wormwood, tsineraria) can be planted next to the whites.

Night plants feel good in such gardens - night violet or fragrant tobacco, for example. They open closer to the night and then begin to smell. Thus, your garden will not lose its monochrome even at night. As for the other types of flowers, the following are acceptable:

    • White Rose,
    • pion,
    • primrose,
    • lily of the valley,
    • tulip,
    • narcissus,
    • balsam,
    • anemone,
    • the bride and others.

Against the background of a white flower garden, spirea and mock-orange of the corresponding varieties look beautiful. Also noteworthy is the fact that your monochrome garden will retain its style even in the snowy winter.

The color of calming and pacification from the point of view of psychology. The lavender fields are blue-violet in color, reminiscent of the sea. Usually, this color is inherent in remote corners of the garden, as if specially created for philosophical reflections and calm relaxation. For such a flower garden, there is a wide selection of species and varieties of plants. Starting from undersized (crocuses, lobelia, forget-me-nots, pansies) and tall flowers (bells, tulips, irises, etc.), and ending with shrubs (budleya, euonymus).

Monochrome flower garden fire. From the first moment it attracts the eye with a riot of colors. The choice of people who prefer an active lifestyle and recreation. To prevent the garden from being overly intrusive, you need to avoid dark and muted flowers in the color of the plants. The highlight of this flower garden is, of course, roses. In addition to them, they are well suited

    • poppies,
    • chrysanthemums,
    • tulips,
    • Cannes,
    • dahlias,
    • carnations,
    • petunias.

It is also desirable to use decorative grasses, in particular, cortaderia or bristles. They will emphasize the saturation of the garden color.

The same red, but much calmer, softer, more affectionate. This monochrome garden looks like every girl's dream. Although in this case the concept of "monochrome" is very loose. To prevent the flower garden from looking dull and burnt out in the sun, light pink colors should be combined with bright ones. It will be good to set off a pink flower bed

    • hedge,
    • lawn,
    • plants with silvery leaves (decorative wormwood or purse).

For this type of flower garden, suitable

    • roses,
    • phlox,
    • peonies,
    • levkoi,
    • carnations,
    • petunias,
    • crocuses,
    • irises,
    • lilies,
    • clematis,
    • daisies, etc.

    Yellow (often yellow-orange)

The color of the sun. Such a monochrome garden will help to maintain a sunny joyful mood even in the most cloudy weather.

This color combination works well for the front part of your garden, as it sets the overall tone.

There are a great variety of yellow and orange flowers - from early crocuses to late chrysanthemums - asters

    • zinnias,
    • nasturtium,
    • calendula,
    • primroses,
    • levkoi,
    • mullein, etc.

Among the shrubs, they have a bright yellow color

    • kerria,
    • bloodroot,
    • mahonia.

The division of the garden into sectors is a fundamental point. The fertility of the crops grown depends on the successful choice of a place for the beds. Accordingly, economic efficiency increases, because vegetables and fruits from the dacha are stored for almost the whole year. And it's just nice when chores in the garden bring good results.

The three whales on which fruitful gardening is built are the terrain, the composition of the soil and its moisture.

    Site relief

Not all elevation changes, slopes are suitable for vegetable growing, growing fruit crops and growing flowers. Do not set up a garden or vegetable garden in lowlands, hollows, especially narrow and long ones. The temperature in them is always lower due to stagnant cold air, and the soil is too moist. In such an area, the plants will die from frost or rot.

A flat plane is least susceptible to temperature fluctuations, has the most uniform moisture content and soil composition throughout the entire area. With the appearance of a slope, the temperature regime changes at its different heights.

Every 100 meters upwards gives a decrease in the average annual temperature by half a degree or a degree. This seems like an insignificant difference, but for some plants it can become fatal in the first frost.

For most plantings, the best option is a not very flat, but not entirely flat area with an orientation to the southwest and southeast. The lower part of such an area will be more humid, shady and cooler. It is more suitable for shade-loving plants that require a lot of moisture.

As it rises, the land will become drier, and the temperature will be higher. The very top will warm up in the sun faster and more efficiently. It is convenient to plant vegetables and berry crops in ascending order in accordance with their needs for sun and water.

    Climate of the region

In the north-west of the country, a slope with a south side, taking more to the west than to the east, is considered the most suitable for an orchard. On the Ural and Siberian slopes, on the contrary, you need to choose the eastern side to protect yourself from the harsh manifestations of the climate. The southern, mountainous regions in any area have the same problem - a lack of moisture. A flat area or a gentle slope with an irrigation system is optimal.

    Soil and subsoil composition

Choosing a suitable environment for the development of the root system of plants is a job for a specialist.

If the initial assessment of the site can be done by inspection, then to determine the composition of the soil, subsoil and underlying rocks, an agrochemical analysis is required.

Fortunately for gardeners, soil type is not a sentence. Fertilizing, plowing, or forming a new layer of black soil today are affordable services that are often used by owners of private gardens.

Good soil is permeable to water and air - it has a loose structure. Suitable for cultivation of crops: slightly podzolic, loamy, sandy loam, gray compositions of the earth. Gardens are also easily created in the forest-steppe, with a brown, chestnut and black composition.

Do not expect anything good from clay, loamy, crushed stone, loose sandy, and brackish soils.

    Soil moisture level

It is directly affected by the presence of groundwater. They usually nourish plants, but if they are too close to the root system, they cool the soil, saturate it with sulfates and create unfavorable conditions for growth. The remoteness of groundwater from the root system should be at least 2 meters.

The distance from the ground is considered from the species, plant variety and rootstock. For example, for apple trees on a dwarf rootstock - 1-1.2 m, and for another rootstock, at least one and a half meters is required.

In addition, the choice of location is influenced by: where exactly the garden will be planted, the microclimate of the entire site, the biological characteristics of fruit and berry crops. On uninhabited territory, you can focus on indicator plants. If oaks, maples, legumes grow well nearby, this is a good place.

If you already have a country house and green spaces, you need to choose places to redesign the garden based on the relationship between objects and plants. For example, for light-loving plants, it is important to cultivate a front garden in front of the house. And behind the dwelling, in the shade of the walls, shade-loving cultures will feel good.

Also, in front of the house, you can plant low shrubs, focusing on the height of the window frames. Bushes and trees can be placed around the perimeter, vegetables - in the center of the site. Such vegetables as pumpkin, zucchini, cabbage like to change from time to time the place of "residence" in the beds.

How can you use a snag in the country?

Crafts from stumps and snags, which make up a single composition, look very unusual. After all, surely everyone in the country has a broken thick branch, a small fallen tree, etc. They can also be adapted for a summer residence, for example, as a stand of an unusual curved shape, on which you can attach a garden sink or hang a small planter made of the same hemp.

And if you come across a large branched branch, the base of which is 6-10 cm thick, then you are very lucky. From such a copy, you can build a beautiful composition. First, the branch must be cleaned and treated with a protective compound. Then firmly anchor in the ground, for example, concrete or dug in to a sufficient depth.

And then we turn on the fantasy! You can hang a bird feeder on one branch, and a stylized clock, a decorative nest or flower pots on the other. Also, such a branch can become a summer cottage dryer for cups, jars and other utensils.

If you have an alpine slide, then a driftwood covered with moss and elongated in a horizontal direction will be a great addition to the composition. It can be planted with ground cover ornamental plants, which over time will partially cover the snag.

Or maybe you will come across a driftwood with various natural grooves. Then you can pour a little soil into them and plant stonecrops, young and other plants. Such a thing looks very impressive and beautiful.

The V-shaped twig can be used as a crochet hook. This is done like this: fix one end of a strong rope on a branch, and the other on the wall.

You can even assemble a bench from snags. It will have an unusual and very original look. The main thing is to choose strong branches that will most likely be able to withstand the weight of a person.

Also, a thick branch can be cut into cylinders of different heights, cut a shallow hole in them and used as candlesticks. Just be very careful, wood is highly flammable.

It is worth remembering that wood is a rather fragile material., which, when exposed to moisture, collapses, rots. A stump is an old tree that is doubly subject to self-destruction. Therefore, it is imperative to carry out processing with special chemicals and varnishes to prevent these destructive processes, especially if you want to make crafts from stumps and snags for more than one season. However, if you want to get a mossy effect, then there is no need for such events.

Get inspired, fantasize and boldly bring your ideas to life!
